Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Prayer for the Morning
God brings down the pride of the haughty,/ but the humble he saves:/ let us offer him our humble praise.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,
is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!
HymnMeter: 76 76 D
This hymn can be sung to the tune used for
All Glory, Laud, and Honor
The clouds of judgment gather,
The time is growing late;
Be sober and be watchful;
Our Judge is at the gate:
The Judge who comes in mercy,
The Judge who comes in might
To put an end to evil
And diadem the right.
Arise, O true disciples,
Let wrong give way to right,
And penitential shadow
To Jesus’ blessèd light:
The light that has no evening,
That knows no moon or sun,
The light so new and golden,
The light that is but one.
Psalm 123
The measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you. (cf. Lk 6:38)
Christ has harsh words for the haughty and hypocritical. God is the one true judge and we will all stand before him. To truly help our brothers and sisters, we begin by humbly acknowledging our sins, asking for the Lord’s forgiveness and grace, which will make us into trees that bear good fruit.
To you have I lifted up my eyes,
you who dwell in the heavens:
my eyes, like the eyes of slaves
on the hand of their lords.
Like the eyes of a servant
on the hand of her mistress,
so our eyes are on the Lord our God
till he show us his mercy.
Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy.
We are filled with contempt.
Indeed all too full is our soul
with the scorn of the rich,
with the proud man’s disdain.
Glory to the Father….
Word of GodRomans 12:3, 10, 16
By the grace given to me I tell everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than one ought to think, but to think soberly, each according to the measure of faith that God has apportioned.
Love one another with mutual affection; anticipate one another in showing honor. Have the same regard for one another; do not be haughty but associate with the lowly; do not be wise in your own estimation.
Do not complain, brothers, about one another,
that you may not be judged. Behold, the Judge is standing before the gates. (Jas 5:9)
Canticle of Zechariah(Text, back cover B)
Remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter in your brother’s eye. (Lk 6:42)
Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;
he has come to his people and set them free.
He has raised up for us a mighty savior,
born of the house of his servant David.
Through his holy prophets he promised of old
that he would save us from our enemies,
from the hands of all who hate us.
He promised to show mercy to our fathers
and to remember his holy covenant.
This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:
to set us free from the hands of our enemies,
free to worship him without fear,
holy and righteous in his sight
all the days of our life.
You, my child, shall be called the prophet
of the Most High;
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,
to give his people knowledge of salvation
by the forgiveness of their sins.
In the tender compassion of our God
the dawn from on high shall break upon us,
to shine on those who dwell in darkness
and the shadow of death,
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.
Glory to the Father…
Intercessions
Christ can correct our vision when we are blind to our own sin and judgmental toward others. We pray:
RMOpen our eyes, O Lord!
To our hypocrisies and injustices, R
To our own great need of you, R
To the needs of our brothers and sisters, R
Personal intentions
Our Father….
O God, who taught us not to judge but to trust in your judgment, help us to humble ourselves that we may banish all haughtiness from our hearts and love one another as you have loved us. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
